My plan to move to Finland

Where to start?

Hi there,

I have made the decision to move to Finland. OK, the decision was finalised in January, and it's now June, and I have not moved. But the move cannot, unfortunately, happen so fast. There is plenty to organise.

First, it's very important that you have a job. This has been worked out for me, well, I hope anyway as things are not really at their best at the moment. But I'm still waiting that my boyfriend gets a job there. Thing is, he's Finnish, so it should not be as difficult for him. But it appears that they are not really looking to employ someone currently not living in Finland. So we have come to the decision that we would move without a job for him and hope that he finds one more easily once we're there. Now it's a question of being able to afford it, but this is another problem... For now he is still applying, insisting that he is looking to be back in Finland within two months. (That's if our economies allow us to do it)

Now, it is really important for anyone planning to move to Finland and who isn't Finnish to be sure they can have a job, because there will be no help finding one and or paying for a place to live by the government. Even if you can speak Finnish, getting a job in Finland when you're not a national is not easy, unless your language is needed. That's why I have decided to get a job where I can work from home, that will follow me there. Now this can be a bit risky, because you have no garantee of what type of money you're gonna make, but I'm sure that holding on to it will be worth it.

Anyway, thinking about the money, we have been saving a lot, and selling things we realised we don't need. There are many places to use to do that, the internet (auction sites of all sorts), shop windows, second hand shops... We still have a few pieces of furniture if anyone is interested, desks and bookshelves mostly... Another thing we've done, as we realise that the less quantity and weight you have the cheapest it will be, we decided to get rid of the DVD boxes, keeping only the DVD and paper jacket. You can't imagine the space and weight we have won! Some say that they cannot have their DVDs in pockets, but we will buy second hand DVD boxes once in Finland, or keep it like that, because to be honest, I didn't think I could, but I did get used to having them like that! And the need for furniture is shortened too, enabling us to get a smaller place to live. So all in all, I say why not?

So all I'm waiting for now is more funds to be able to be sure I can afford it, and give the letter to the agency for a move within 2 months. Bit of luck my BF finds a job as well.

For next time, I plan to find more about the rules on working in Finland! And until then I will think about Finland

Good luck moving to Finland. My husband and I lived there for 15 months and we came back last November. We had a wonderful time. I found the book History of Finland by Jason Lavery and published by Greenwood Press very helpful in preparing for the stay.

If you get the chance, you should visit Lappland in winter. The dark days have an atmosphere that is very hard to describe, one has to experience it.

My plan to move Finland will only come true when Nokia gives me "Job Appointment Letter" hahahah well that was a joke. But i would really like to visit Finland.

My sincere best wishes to you for going Finland and enjoying the time there!

Thanks!

Haha, thanks for that. I have to say that a job appointment at Nokia would not be unwelcome!!

I lived in Finland for 6 years. It's a wonderful country with great nature and very smart people. The winters are tough though. Not the snow but the darkness can really set the mood very low for a couple of months.

Good luck, hope you'll find a nice place in Finland!

Fawwad, thanks for your comment. Yes, the winter seems to be very dark in Finalnd, it is already around 0 (Celsius) here, and the day time gets shorter every day. However, I have spent the full last summer here, and let me tell you it was HOT and there wasn't a lot of night! But that's what happens the further you live from the Equator, the more the difference between winter and summer and the length of day light and night time as the Earth goes around the sun...

What kind of job you did when you first moved to Finland?

Sorry for the delay in replying to you.

When I first came I was not working. There is a school program in Finland, where you can be paid to learn the language. First you need to register as being unemployed, and then you should be directed towards one course.

Otherwise, I was working on an international construction site, where I was communicating in French and English.

What you can do is go to this page http://www.mol.fi/paikat/

select the area where you will be living (Maakunta), and use English as a search word (Sanahaku).

I am done with my work now, and I will try to go back to school, as I realise that speaking the language will in the end open more doors!
